So here's the story — in the Summer of 2003, we lost our minds for a moment
and bought a library. Yes, a library. Well, actually it was a church most recently,
but originally a library when it was built in 1957. A low, wide mid-century ranch-style
concrete block building on a pie shaped lot on a curved road leading into a quiet
little neighborhood in Southeast Sacramento. A big long rectanglur building with
a single room off the back — a 2,750 sq ft. blank canvas of architecture. It was ripe
for renovation into a big, funky, retro-modern, open-floorplan, semi-industrial loft-style thing
.
With a whole lot of ideas and only a glimmer of how we would actually pull
it off we signed on the dotted line and began what would become the craziest and
busiest year of our lives.

We thought it would take 6-9 months to finish. As you can see by the page links
below, the adventure lasted much longer. This site was initially for our friends and
families to keep up with and look in on the progress. It is now a detailed archive
of the process, from beginning, to moving in, to living in and ongoing details and
improvements. If it's your first visit, you can start scrolling down to follow along.

JULY 2003 — the library as it was when we bought it, bike rack and all.

Some early ideas suggested by architect Gary Orr (Don's employer).
Although, we didn't need anyone to tell us to get rid of the bike rack.

Front view looking down the street.

Interior view of front room looking toward the right end of the building, with Don's
early design ideas.

Front room looking toward house front and center (office) room walls.

The other end of the main area, this will become the master bedroom.

The back room and hallway (which will become a walk-in closet off the master bath).

Exterior rear and side views. The pink areas will be a new door and window.

Man, do we have a lot of work to do!!

So that's what we started with. Click here to go to the next month...
